The 6 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb - Trek Overview

The 6 days Lemosho route is considered one of the most scenic paths on Kilimanjaro, offering stunning panoramic views of the mountain from various angles. As one of the newer routes, Lemosho is a top choice for climbers due to its perfect balance of less crowded trails, breathtaking surroundings, and a high summit success rate. At Climb and Safari Tours, we specialize in guiding climbers on the 6-day Lemosho route, and it’s the preferred choice for many of our clients, who consistently report a fantastic experience.

The Lemosho route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, starting with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the hike progresses through lush rainforests to the Shira Ridge. The trail crosses the entire Shira Plateau, offering a relatively flat hike with minimal elevation gain. The route remains quiet until it joins the Machame route near Lava Tower. From there, climbers pass below the Southern Ice Field on the Southern Circuit before summiting at Barafu. The descent is made via the Mweka route.

Overall, the Lemosho route is highly recommended for its beauty, low traffic, and high success rate.

Summit Success Rate

With a summit success rate of 75%, the 6-Day Luxury Lemosho Route is one of the most popular and successful ways to reach the top of Kilimanjaro. Thanks to its gradual ascent, effective acclimatization strategy, and expert guidance, you’ll be fully prepared to conquer Africa’s highest peak in comfort and style.

6-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our team will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. You’ll have time to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the climb. Meet your guide and receive a comprehensive pre-trek briefing. The guide will review the itinerary, ensure you have the necessary gear, and explain the trek's rules and safety procedures.
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (Dinner included)

After breakfast, you'll drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate (approximately 2.5 to 3 hours). Upon arrival, your trek begins with registration. The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic and remote routes on Kilimanjaro, offering excellent views and a less crowded experience. The trek today takes you through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you’ll be surrounded by dense vegetation and towering trees. The hike to camp takes about 3-4 hours, offering the perfect start to your adventure.
Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,400 ft, 3-4 hours trek
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On Day 2, you'll leave the lush rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone as you begin your steady ascent. As you climb, you’ll notice a change in vegetation, with sparse grass and unique alpine plants, including the famous giant groundsel. After a 5-6 hour hike, you’ll reach Shira 1 Camp. This camp is located on the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain. The area is more open and exposed, and you'll be able to appreciate the vastness of Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 9,400 ft to 11,500 ft, 5-6 hours trek
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 is an important day for acclimatization. You'll ascend to Lava Tower (15,190 ft / 4,600 meters) after leaving Shira Camp. The Lava Tower is a volcanic feature and one of the most impressive geological formations on Kilimanjaro. After reaching Lava Tower, you'll begin your descent to Barranco Camp. The trek to Barranco Camp takes 6-7 hours, with varied terrain including rocky paths, scree, and alpine desert. The descent to Barranco Camp is strategic for acclimatization, helping your body adjust to the higher altitude. You’ll camp at 13,000 ft (3,900 meters) for the night, surrounded by awe-inspiring views of the mountain.
Elevation: 11,500 ft to 15,190 ft to 13,000 ft, 6-7 hours trek
Accommodation: Barranco Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 is a short but challenging day. You'll start the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rock wall that requires some scrambling and careful footing. The climb up the wall is exciting but not technical, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and the summit above. After the climb, you'll head toward Karanga Camp, a shorter but steep hike (about 3-4 hours) where you'll gain altitude. The area around Karanga Camp is more barren, and the camp provides great views of the mountain. This day is another crucial one for acclimatization.
Elevation: 13,000 ft to 13,250 ft, 3-4 hours trek
Accommodation: Karanga Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day begins with a moderate ascent toward Barafu Camp. The route is well-trodden, passing through alpine desert terrain with rocky paths and scree. As you gain altitude, the views of the surrounding landscape become more and more impressive. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, located at 15,255 ft (4,645 meters), you’ll have time to rest and prepare for your summit bid. The camp is exposed to the elements, and it can get cold, so make sure to layer up and keep warm. You’ll enjoy an early dinner and rest, as you’ll need to wake up early for the summit attempt.
Elevation: 13,250 ft to 15,255 ft, 4-5 hours trek
Accommodation: Barafu Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is the day you’ve been preparing for—the summit attempt. You’ll leave Barafu Camp around midnight, trekking under the stars to the summit. The climb to Stella Point (18,900 ft / 5,756 meters) is steep and requires determination, but the sense of achievement when you reach this point is indescribable. From Stella Point, you’ll make the final push to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895 meters), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. At the summit, you’ll be able to enjoy panoramic views and celebrate your achievement. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp (10,171 ft / 3,100 meters) for rest and recovery. The descent is long and can be tough on the knees, but you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views on the way down.
Elevation: 15,255 ft to 19,341 ft to 10,171 ft, 6-8 hours ascent, 6-7 hours descent
Accommodation: Mweka Camp (Tented Camps)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Tips for Beginners 2025 - Lemosho Route

Embarking on a Kilimanjaro climb via the 6-Day Lemosho Route is a thrilling adventure, ideal for beginners seeking a scenic and less-crowded experience. While the Lemosho route offers excellent acclimatization opportunities, preparation remains crucial for a safe and successful trek. Here are some essential tips to help you get ready:
  • Start Training Early: Begin preparing for the trek 3-4 months ahead of time. Focus on building endurance through cardio exercises, strength training, and hiking with a loaded backpack to simulate the trek's physical challenges.
  • Hydrate and Eat Well: Proper hydration is essential for your success. Drink plenty of water before and during the climb. Also, ensure you're eating balanced meals to keep your energy levels up, especially on the more physically demanding days.
  • Pack Smart: Keep your packing light and only bring essential items. Excess weight can slow you down and make the climb harder. Be sure to refer to our "What to Pack" guide to ensure you're carrying the right gear for the Lemosho route.
  • Focus on Acclimatization: The Lemosho Route provides excellent acclimatization with its gradual ascent. Follow your guide's pacing and take it slow to give your body time to adjust to the altitude.
  • Dress in Layers: Kilimanjaro’s weather can change quickly, so dressing in layers is essential. This will help you stay comfortable during the day, with temperatures varying from tropical at the base to freezing near the summit.
  • Listen to Your Guide: The guides on the Lemosho route are experts. Pay attention to their advice regarding pacing, rest breaks, and safety measures. They’ll ensure your success on the mountain.
  • Be Mentally Prepared: Mental resilience is just as important as physical stamina on Kilimanjaro. Summit day will be tough, but a positive mindset will help you overcome the challenges.
  • Practice Using Your Gear: Before your trek, try out all your gear, including boots, sleeping bags, and trekking poles. Properly fitted equipment will prevent discomfort and blisters.
  • Know Your Limits: It's important to listen to your body. If you're feeling ill, exhausted, or experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness, take a break or consider descending. Always prioritize your health and safety.
  • Celebrate Your Success: Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro is an extraordinary achievement. Celebrate your success, take in the breathtaking views, and enjoy the moment when you stand atop the Roof of Africa!
These tips will help guide you to a safe, enjoyable, and successful 6-Day Lemosho Route trek. With the right preparation and mindset, you’ll be ready to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro!
